New units FEB 68 :
The
largest single task faced by Pac ARRC during the first quarter 1968 was
the establishment of rescue
operations in Korea .
Before the Pueblo incident, Search and rescue (SAR) forces were limited
to two HH-43B helicopters at
Pac ARRC Det.9, Osan AB. Through extensive planning and coordination, forces
soon were up to
ten HH-43Bs and three HU-16s.
The
control structure changed from the previous detachment to a provisional
squadron with four detachments
in addition to Det.9 directly under Hq Pac ARRC. The new squadron is the
1646th Provisional Squadron
headquartered at Osan AB.
In addition to the two HH-43Bs there under Det.9, two HU-16s were attached
to Hq 1646th.
Each of the other four detachments under the 1646th are LBRs with two HH-43Bs
each.
These include :
Det. Provisional 1 at Kunsan AB, Korea
Det. Provisional 2 at Taegu AB, Korea
Det. Provisional 3 at Suwon AB, Korea
Det. Provisional 4 at Kwang Ju AB, Korea
On 08 AUG 68 the Korean Provisional units became PCS detachments of Pacific
ARRC ;
the 1646th Provisional Squadron (ARRS) was deactivated.
