The story presented as "UDORN CRASH" in one of the pages of this
website since February 2003 - a crash that was thought to have happended in 1973 or later - actually
appeared to be much different.
The key-picture on the
"UDORN CRASH" -page is seen here below again, but now it is dated as
taken during 1969.
"The MAC Flyer" March 1970 pages prove that the
"upside-down-Huskie" accident took place in 1969.
The person who
provided the below copies, is former PJ Charles Hoell Jr., CSMGt (ret) - with
thanks to Mr. Stephen P. Mock, MSgt (ret), who was so kind to forward
the documents to me.
From the
handwritten notes on the picture we understand that the crashed HH-43B was from
DET.12 at U Tapao AB and that the crewmembers did survive.
Besides the tragic crash
of 59-1562 on 19 July 1969 at U Tapao AB, there was another crash of a U Tapao based Huskie
reported , namely 60-0278 on 10 July 1969. It seems logic now, that the
"upside-down-Huskie" is 60-0278.
The "UDORN CRASH" story -
the text
- was published in "The MAC Flyer" of March 1974. At least two persons suggested
me that this 1974 story never took place - the writing is fiction, simply to
demonstrate a Flying Safety theme.
